In 1969, Oliver Sacks, a neurologist in his thirties, found himself in a hospital from the Bronx with a group of patients who had been in a catatonic state for decades. He identified them as survivors of a devastating encephalitis epidemic that happened four decades ago, and tested some new medicine with them, which provided extraordinary results: the patients woke up after their tragic lethargy, and there he was, documenting it with the camera. It was a memorable story that was turned into a book, Awakenings, the film by Penny Marshall of the same name, and now this short by Bill Morrison that makes use the original Super 8 images as well as music by Philip Glass in order to pay a fair tribute to Doctor Sacks.
