The Surire salt mine in the northern extreme of Chile is a natural monument, a conservation area 4,300 meters high that consists in a desert and many lagoons that cover more than 11,000 hectares. A striking natural scenery that would fascinate Werner Herzog not only for its wild beauty, but also its status as an unaltered paradise, which has hardly ever been filmed and is uncontaminated by the hand of man. At least that’s what it was until an important borax deposit was discovered, and some extraction companies settled there in order to exploit the area’s natural resources. But Surire is not the kind of ecological denouncement documentary we have seen so many times before. Through their work, Bettina Perut and Iván Osnovikoff continue building an in-depth study of their country as no other filmmaker. And, by observing, they smartly capture the details of the cruel, inevitable moment when places, customs and living things disappear, and the landscape changes forever. LL
