Young Italian director Alice Rohrwacher’s second film after the appreciable Corpo celeste (2011) confirms her meteoric growth as a filmmaker. In this case, such growth doesn’t imply a visual style constrained by rigid characteristics; on the contrary, it is based on her ability to remain open to the possibility of life sneaking into the shooting, just like Jean Renoir wanted. In her captivating summer portrait of twelve year-old Gelsomina, her sisters, and her entourage, Rohrwacher manages to capture –even if it may sound like a topic– moments of pure life that flow before our eyes with an amazingly natural feel, starred by portentous actors who doesn’t seem to be so. It’s an ode to rural Italy and its traditions that yet doesn’t fall into simplification or idealization, but rather participates on heterodox and dark elements, and even gives way to Fellini-like dreams.
