When we hear the voice of the farcical Miguel Paulino Tato unraveling his creed, or when many famous local distributors tell of the hilarious title changes of films for their local release, one understands that Calori’s film far surpasses its explicit purpose of being an oral and unlikely history of cinephilia, and that, while it’s at it, sketches some sort of archeology of what Bafici is today. If it’s true that Bafici marked a milestone regarding audience, filmmakers and specialists, and that it has decisively contributed to the gradual emergence of a new specialized audience, An Important Premiere could be seen as an inquiry on the cultural and political evolutions, crises and transformations that turned cinema of public exhibition into a phenomenon whose possible extinction, or occasional survival, the film also examines.
