Louis Theroux documents his research on what happens behind the scenes at the Scientology church.
What is this enigma of Scientology, that secret alchemy that draws a handful of powerful people with multiple channels to promote it? Louis Theroux may not be able to find a conclusive answer, but he manages to deliver a sketch for it with a detective-like elegance that constitutes, perhaps, the most distinguished gesture of this modest and unexpectedly affable film. A man with experience in television, Theroux not only interviews people connected to Scientology, but also begins a search for actors that would play its most praised characters. The result is a series of scenes that are both funny and revealing. The film tries to disarm the rhetorical structure with essentially liturgical elements this belief appears to be sustained by. DO
