Aardman’s first 3D adventure is, firstly, a return to stop-motion Claymation and, secondly, a pirate movie. Once more, Aardman takes forms from which it would seem impossible to provoke instant joy (playing with a Vincente Minnelli-style pirate mold) and succeeds in concentrating not only virtues and possible comedies of the genre, but also a sense of the absurd that is perfectly malleable and coherent. The Pirates! Band of Misfits confirms that, when Aardman comes on board, all we have is a chance to smile. JMD
