After having gone through lots of changes, breakups and fights, pioneering punk rock band The Damned has become one of the longest-running groups in their genre, and an unavoidable influence to those who came after them.

If you take any of the four members of the Damned’s original lineup, you can build a family tree of musical styles (and visual styling) from them. Dave Vanian was almost the first goth; Captain Sensible is a pillar of extravagant pop; Rat Scabies is the punk hooligan than can be nothing but a troublemaker; and the ephemeral Brian James has “I make working-class rock” tattooed on his forehead. All of this was taking place in 1976, when the Damned was the outpost of British punk. The amazing thing is that it’s still happening now. This film by Wes Orchoski (who had already immortalized Lemmy in another rockumentary) exposes all the anecdotes of madness and musical milestones (Chrissie Hynde, Ian MacKaye, Mick Jones and Jello Biafra bow down before them) that fit in in these forty years.
