After being the sole witness to a domestic fight that ended up with a murder, Patrascu decides to keep quiet and move on with his life, until the possible killer starts to get close to his wife and son.
One Floor Below has a few things in common with Woody Allen’s latest film (Irrational Man), being that both of them revolve around an ethical decision its protagonist takes, a decision he considers to be fair and adequate but that soon complicates his life. That decision drives him into a series of problems that fence the protagonists in some sort of silent duel of “I know you know I know.” The film becomes further proof that it’s possible to include genre elements in a realistic drama without sacrificing plausibility. That is the secret of Romanian cinema: creating tension, making intelligent political interpretations and painting the society of that country with films of a subtle mise en scène and an indisputable internal logic.
