One of Bogdanovich’s trademarks: looking at classic film from the present. The film is presented as a voyage of discovery between a man and his daughter (Ryan and Tatum O’Neal, father and daughter both in fiction and real life) across the United States during the Great Depression.
We worked really hard to get the period-feel in Paper Moon right. We shot all over Kansas and a few weeks in Missouri. I think it’s the best work Ryan O’Neal’s done. That wonderful laugh he came up with, that cackle, was just wonderful. Paramount owned the property originally and had John Huston lined up to direct with Paul Newman and his daughter to star. Then they wanted me to direct, but I didn’t particularly want to do it with Paul. I wanted to do it with Ryan, so that’s what happened. And then, I just had to keep him from killing his daughter. He will shout ‘Goddamn it, Tatum, would you learn your lines? I’m not going to do it again. We’ve done it twenty-eight times! I did five thousand Peyton Places, and I never went through anything like this.’ And this happens on a road in the middle of Kansas with nothing anywhere but Kansas and a car with a camera on it and about twelve people hanging on.
