The (criminal) plot or the affaire (between the investigating woman and the investigated man) are of little importance in The Thomas Crown Affair, a hyper-stylish game of cat and mouse that features split screens, a minute-long kiss, and plenty of cool on both ends of the camera. The film took years to gain a certain cult status (and 31 to have a remake), but Legrand didn’t have to wait that long: his first important job in Hollywood won him the Oscar for Best Original Song with the beautiful and baroque “The Windmills of Your Mind.” AM
