In the mythical rehearsal rooms of Havana’s Grand Theater, Amanda and Viengsay put great effort to their demanding routine. Their moves and their aspirations echo those of their predecessor, Alicia Alonso, the prima ballerina, unbeatable at 90.
The first minutes of Horizontes feature the three female protagonists gliding over the execution of a pirouette, which works as an ellipsis and introduces us to the people who represent the past, present, and future of classic ballet in Cuba. It all starts with archive footage of the legendary Alicia Alonso at the height of her career. Cut, and through that same exercise we meet the current prima ballerina Viengsay Valdés. Another cut, and we see the very young Amanda de Jesús Pérez Duarte preparing an audition for the National Ballet. Horizontes is a breathtaking film about three woman who deliver and allow themselves to have every muscle, gesture, and movement modeled out in order to reach perfection in the art that transforms the body into a sublime instrument.
