This South Korean film tells the story of Park Go, a man who turned into a fish due to the side effects of an experimental drug. His mutant condition leads him to become s national celebrity.
Every now and then, when nothing prepares us for it, a cinema we believed to be forgotten comes to us from Asia: images built with a sublime freedom, a disconcerting ability for unexpected plot twists, lack of shame, and a firm belief on a kind of cinema whose immediate fate is ridicule or astonishment. The director picks a chord that oscillates between the unforeseeable comedy, the highly tautened melodrama, and the melancholy of monsters who don’t fit in the world and embrace their deformity and either be saved or lost forever. As eccentric as its protagonist, Collective Invention is a film that was born with a special aura, and is part of a somewhat renowned gallery of freak objects from recent cinema. DO
