One night in April 1957, 19-year-old Albertina escaped prison where she was serving a sentence for robbery. While escaping, she breaks an anklebone called astragalus. She will jump from one hiding spot to another, struggling to remain free.
While Sy may seek to emulate the mood and aesthetics of the Nouvelle Vague, with rich black and white photography and nods to the likes of Vivre sa vie and Shoot the Piano Player, Astragal is very much a piece of work of the 21st century. While details remain unchanged from the 50 year-old source material, the fact that Albertine has of a post-colonial background takes on a second meaning post-Charlie Hebdo. State harassment of Algerian residents fills the streets of Sy’s Paris, to which Albertine has fled following her escape from prison. The title comes from the name of a bone in the ankle, the part of the body that Albertine breaks during her prison escape. While the resulting limp becomes the character’s key physical attribute, it’s in her emotional foundation where she struggles and fights to maintain a semblance of normality. AB
