The ‘80s wouldn’t have been the same without this high-school fable that talked about social differences. Molly Ringwald completes her transformation into a pop icon by playing Andie, a middle-class girl in love with a rich boy.
“People forget that when you’re 16, you’re probably more serious than you’ll ever be again. You think seriously about the big questions,” John Hughes once said, making a mark on his canon. Behind that quote is the philosophy that rules over ‘80s classics like Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but that also extends to the films scripted by Hughes and directed by Howard Deutch: Pretty in Pink and –its almost-remake, a little less pop and with a different ending– Some Kind of Wonderful. It is possible that Pretty in Pink invented pop as we understand it today, with its volcanic wardrobe, its new-wave hairstyles, the relationships with cardiovascular implications and that immortal soundtrack. An with Andie and Duckie, two irresistible characters. PC
