In 1979, Roman Polanski delivered one of the most overwhelming films of his career when he adapted Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Featuring an especially sublime Nastassja Kinski, the director of Repulsion returned all of its deserved honors to Hardy’s novel, which was attacked by critics at the time of its publication, and crafted a delicate melodrama about the double standard of Victorian England and the loneliness that seems to be the fate of virtuous beings.
