A carpenter of Irish descent finds himself overcome by inexplicable fatigue and tries to regain the spirit of the first US settlers in order to save himself.
Things we’ve learned from Spokane, Rick Alverson’s band: melancholy isn’t sadness; the artistic search can have many aspects, but it’s insistence that outlines consistency; building a house with one’s own hands –as the trio did with the house where they would record Little Hours, their latest album– is not just the act in itself, but also everything it takes to fulfilling it –or not. In The Builder, his first feature in search of new horizons, away from music, Alverson decides to stand at the exact spot where a way of understanding the world defines one’s work, and places his gaze on the moments in between, those in which what happens is more important than we think it is, which are undoubtedly those that define us the most. The realism of the moments in between. That’s what The Builder is about. PC

He was born in Spokane , Washington, United States in 1971. He directed several music videos and feature films The Builder (2010) , New Jeruzalem (2011), The Comedy (2012) and Entertainment (2015), screened at this year’s Bafici. He currently lives in Richmond, Virginia.
