The X FIBA welcomes two great European artists performing in the City for the first time. Belgian Ivo van Hove, director of leading Dutch theatre company Toneelgroep Amsterdam, and fellow countryman Jan Lauwers with the Needcompany. The former brings Opening Night, a production combining theatre and cinema, based on the eponymous film by John Cassavetes. A layered matrix of interlocking elements reflect the crisis of a famed actress, in the run-up to the debut of her new play. Lauwers presents two creations that reveal his multidisciplinary approach to theatre making: Isabella’s Room uses a mix of live music, dance, visual arts and theatre to represent the secret that dominates the life of an old blind woman, and The Blind Poet, recently premiered at Kunstenfestivaldesart and co-produced by FIBA, reflects on identity in today’s multicultural Europe going back a thousand years. Another company debuting this year is Australia’s Back to Back Theatre, composed of actors with and without a disability, who perform Ganesh versus the Third Reich. Two stunning productions come from Spain. Catalan company Agrupación Señor Serrano, winner of a Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale 2015, presents Brickman Brando Bubble Boom: a dynamic format mixing performance, text, video, sound and installations to depict the seemingly distant lives of two people, the builder who inspired the first mortgage system in history, and actor Marlon Brando, who is searching for a home. Choreographer Sol Picó returns to the Festival with We Women, a piece co-produced by FIBA and Festival Grec, in which female dancers from diverse cultures paint a portrait of the contemporary woman. France participates with three shows. The Groupe F opens the Festival with À Fleur de Peau, a stunning open-air spectacle combining projected images, sound and fireworks. Argentine Rodrigo García, current director of Centre Dramátique National de Montpellier, presents Gólgota Picnic, a radical, excessive show ridden with biblical references but exploring other fields too. And director and actor Arthur Nauzyciel offers a reading of Allen Ginsberg’s KADDISH, the long poem that the Beat author wrote after his mother’s death. Special mention must be made of the version of Verdi’s opera Macbeth made by South African director Brett Bailey: a touching, brilliant and colorful show that relocates the Shakespearean drama in Africa, where local tyrants and multinationals are wrecking havoc, and whose singers have been themselves victims of the violence depicted on stage. Argentine-born, Berlin-based Constanza Macras brings one of her most recent works, The Past, in which dancers explore the relationship between space and memory. Cuba visits us with Antigonón, by Rogelio Orizondo, a leading figure of the country’s new drama who is getting a lot of attention at European festivals; while Chile and Peru bring Castigo and La cautiva respectively, which deal with family and social violence.

A table, a chair. The voice of Étienne Daho rises. Arthur Nauzyciel comes in, sits down. He reads. One page after another, the tenderness of the poem of Allen Ginsberg written in 1959, on amphetamines, impresses our senses. Cruel love song, ironic and painful, where the ruthless narration of...
