Comedia de la inocencia

In Comedy of Innocence, the tireless Franco-Chilean director Raúl Ruiz tells the story of a boy with two mothers. The innocent Camille (later Paul) questions his family about his origins (childbirth included), delving into past conflicts and accounts not settled. The story, additionally, poses another kind of questionings, but of an aesthetic nature. Comedy of Innocence turns out to be a deceptive title. In a film about appearances (with its comedy tone and the naiveté of its main character, although this is what matters least), the director’s concerns are again the ambiguous differences between theatrical and film representation (which is what matters most.) As in Time Recovered, where Ruiz draws a parallel between film and literature, Comedy of Innocence is another study on the purity of film language and its correspondence with the other arts.
