The Argentine coast has some characteristics that are hard to translate: tourist attractions, the everyday pace, the personality of its inhabitants and urban identity. Lucía Ferreyra’s first film, a feature based on a short, traces line after line the skeleton of one of those coastal towns: Mar del Sur. The introspective, sensitive point of view of the young director makes us feel the wet sand in the soles of our feet, the smell of saturated oil from a cone of french fries and the frizz the sea air causes in the hair. A nostalgic love letter to a place that looks like many others and no other. Pancakes, video games and jellyfish bring back expired images in the characters’ saliva, while future memories are born. Foreigner doesn’t need any overblown conflicts in order for the audience to fall in love, because, in spite of being a simple story, it contains those powerful details that make a film great. MD
