Village Recoleta - Vicente López y Junín

“The Chinese replica of the Austrian town of Hallstatt opens its doors,” read the headlines in mid 2012. Indeed, in record time and very near the explosive “special economic area” of Shenzhen in Southern China, a high-end real estate development didn’t include a mall, a park, or a recreational compound, but a 1:1 reproduction of Hallstatt, a charming town in the Austrian Alps. A whole town, copied. The fact would already be pretty rich material for any format, either a denunciation or a joke (both in their easiest versions: globalization). Yet what Ella Raidel does is asking others and herself: in Austria and China she talks with proud and stunned citizens from both Hallstatts. And also –and above all– she overlaps what was carved by time over what money quickly erected, con-fusing both cities in a virtuous way, and tempting the limits in which the idyllic turns into a nightmare, and reality becomes pure simulation.
