Following his outstanding debut –the must-see The Myth of the American Sleepover– Mitchell’s It Follows proves he’s one of the few current filmmakers who really understands what scaring people is about. Like a coming-of-age tale that transforms into a they’re-coming-to-get-you story, his second film is a horror flick that reverses the genre’s common places and builds up the tension with impossibly open shots and rhythmical camera movements. The key lies in the film’s brilliant construction of atmospheres, in a unique universe with powerful rules: Evil takes on different human shapes, and attacks its victims until it brutally murders them. In order to avoid so, you have to have plenty of sex, and keep love very far from the equation. If the Cartesian coordinates of horror cinema are the atmosphere and the shocks, It Follows ranks high on the first one: instead of sporadic and predictable shocks (the worst part of the genre these days), Mitchell’s precise and calculated construction of climates holds spectators on pins and needles, with an admirably classic storytelling adjusted by Disasterpiece’s powerful score. David Robert Mitchell Estados Unidos

He was born in Detroit, USA, in 1972, and lives in Los Angeles. He studied Film at the Florida State University. He directed the short Virgin (2002) and the feature The Myth of the American Sleepover (2010; winner of the Special Jury Prize at the SXSW Festival.)
