Sueñan los androides

Sister film to The Future (Bafici ‘14), both share crew (the director of one produces the other, and vice versa) and, most importantly, the same aching for the present of a whole country and its inhabitants thrown down the drain. Unamuno’s “Spain hurts me” as reinterpreted in a post-modernistic key. If The Future resorted to flashbacks in order to talk about today’s misery, Androids Dream travels to a close future suspiciously similar to the present to shoot a low-intensity remake of Phillip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Ship? A remake that is nothing but the starting point of a deeply painful generational portrait: that of those young people, which are replicants in the film, that are condemned to die in the hands of a merciless cop; to go on strike, to emigrate, to apathy, and the forced lack of future. Few times has Spanish cinema confronted its political present as critically as it has in the last few years. Enjoy while you can: perhaps next year there will be no Spain in which to shoot films as unique as this one. GdPA
