In Ezequiel Acuña’s films, music plays a very important role (as well as young friendship and love, the feelings that are hard to translate into words, the absences that hurt and off-season beaches), so much so that we suspected that him making a film about a rock band was just a matter of time. Somebody’s Life, inspired by Uruguayan band La Foca and shot in 35mm, something that, at this point, proves nostalgic, is that film: an imaginary biography that tells of the band’s origins, the creative process of an album and the disappearance of one of its members. And he tells it with his characteristic mixture of melancholy and amiable humor –some sort of Buenos Aires spleen that once again becomes, as in Swimming Alone, also Mar del Plata’s– but, above all, he tells it through some precious songs that are action sequences rather than music videos. Somebody’s Life is also another film: a compilation of Acuña’s three previous films; a “greatest hits” that includes almost all of his endearing gang of actors led by Santiago Pedrero, with guest vocals by the luminous Ailín Salas. 29 th MDP Film Fest’s catalogue
