From Scotland with Love

There are lots of films that look like From Scotland with Love, but we should also say this one doesn’t look like any other. Less cerebral than Gustav Deutsch’s Welt Spiegel Kino and more surprising than Electric Edwardians –that collection of footage and primitive views of British pioneers Mitchell and Kenyon– Virginia Heath’s huge little montage film starts out from hundreds, thousands of pieces of amateur and documentary Scottish film history in order to create a sort of moving national seal that is capable of both captivating and illuminating us at the same time. From social issues to landscapes, from myth to traditions, from patriotic to cultural emotion, the images –which instead of speaking move by the rhythm of King Creosote’s zigzagging music– parade on screen without any kind of revisionist spirit apart from its wish to look back and understand what’s coming. In that sense, devoted to orphan cinema from the last century, From Scotland with Love is an ode of love to a nation, but also to a whole visual thinking. PM
