The films by “the kids from independent cinema” don’t usually have sequels, but UPA 2! has enough eccentricity and self-confidence to embark on such task. The kids from the first UPA! had received the Argentine Competition’s main award at Bafici 2007 –in 2015, they maintain their boldness and their ability to observe while they place a deformed mirror in front of the language, the gestures, the blemishes of one sector of Argentine cinema. Also back is the lack of restrain when laughing at the modest ambitions, power struggles, and egos. UPA 2! digs deeper still: the comical corrosion of the small world they chose to deform and satirize. In this second installment, Bafici itself is the film’s kick-off point, and is also the object of the acid, self-critical, self-aware point of view of directors Giralt, Toker and Garateguy. UPA 2! allows itself to go beyond its predecessor, and the characters are more deeply defined, with less malice and more empathy, in sequences with enough ambition and pace for comedy to breathe independently, beyond the object of parody.
