Five independent fictions converge in a theme that is common to all of them: the social and legal condemnation suffered in Kenya by individuals whose sexuality doesn’t fit with the normative heterosexual model. Based on anonymous testimonies by Kenyan LGBTIQ people, and almost as a manifesto in favor of sexual freedom, Stories of Our Lives portrays love and sex scenes between gays and lesbians with such sincerity that it avoids resorting to any kind of pedagogic discourse –this way, it recreates intimate, everyday situations from people that, due to their choices, are systematically persecuted by their families, by society and by the State. The feature directed by Jim Chuchu, with striking black and white photography saturated to the extreme –maybe as a metaphor for the violence its main characters suffer–, poetically explores the diverse ways of loving that, in circumstances such as these, are transmuted into acts of resistance and rebellion against the oppression of majorities.
