Mid-size films without any grand pretensions are very welcomed. What pretensions are those? To find an audience! Without giving up its original idea, no low punches or miscalculations, and without resigning its identity, How to Win Enemies features characteristics local cinema are not really used to: a well-written and better executed script, overlapping genres, precise acting performances, tensions of all kinds, and even those laughs that seem to be forbidden. We can talk about black comedy as a genre, although at times darkness –both in and out of the frame– beats the comedy. The story Gabriel Lichtman tells in his second feature-length film (after Jews in Space, from 2005) is a love story that covers up a scam –a plot that thickens with friends and family– or the one of a man’s eternal relationship with his own paranoia. If we’re living the country of “save your self”, then films like these should be the ones depicting it. MP

Gabriel Lichtmann Argentina

He was born in Buenos Aires and trained as a film director at Universidad del Cine. He wrote the script for El séptimo día ( Historias breves 1998; 2000 Berlin Film Festival). His feature-length film Jews in Space won a Project Development Award from the Hubert Bals Fund (Rotterdam Film Festival) and was screened in Bafici ‘05.
