The 130 minutes that Loznitsa gets from three months of resistance and combat as the population of Kiev take Maidan Square are fascinating. Unlike what any other documentary maker might have done, Loznitsa did not pull off the usual slapdash, urgent report as these events are so often treated, but rather put into practice a highly rigorous mise en scene device. Despite the fact that, for the first time in his career, he had to work with immediate reality, without his customary meticulous prior planning, Loznitsa applied his genius as a filmmaker to the problem. He ruled out any kind of interview, narrators or talking heads, used large general fixed shots and long takes without cuts. But, above all, he systematically avoided the wide angle and handheld camera, so televisual and trite in these cases. The result is simply breathtaking, a rare work of art that depicts these events clearly but at the same time transcends them, as if a revolution could tell it all, in the best possible way. Born in Belarus in 1964, he grew up in Kiev, Ukraine, where he graduated as a mathematician and worked as a scientist specializing in artificial intelligence. Later he studied Filmmaking at the VGIK in Rusia and directed several films, including Life, Autumn (1999), Blockade (2006), The Revue (2008), My Joy (2010) and In the Fog (2012).
