Idyll presents itself as a love story. Yes, Camila is in love, “stupid in love”: that’s how the film begins, that’s its first chapter. Since she’s in love, she sees the word with an enthusiast smile, maybe too enthusiast. Sebastián, her friend and confidant, listens to and tolerates her. He even tries to remain rational with a rather composed kindness. The relationship that made Camila so in love, well, the film will describe that. How? In black and white, with chapters separated by songs, fixed shots that mostly show the protagonist, an actress in her first movie lead role named Paula Carruega, who sustains an emotional journey that at first seemed impossible in those minimalist conditions. But Carruega dazzles us, and the conditions in the film –which uses gestures, dialogues, inflections, nerves, and reactions with remarkable precision– are proven adequate, and even the right ones –in the case of the reverse-shot– in order to tell this story that maybe is not as much about love as it is about growing up, which is inseparable from pain.
