Delfina: a married woman with a husband and a teenage daughter, a solid financial status, and a maid. A friend introduces her to Kamil, an older man who plays in the big finances but above all plays the role of manipulating and sophisticated shark. It’s not so much that Kamil is pretending as the fact that everything in Martyrdom and Pleasure is crossed by a masquerade game, because of Campusano’s peculiar notions about the acting and dialogues, which consistently carry artifice and charge the story with particular electricity. In a new incursion for his cinema, as it approaches something the likes of upper or upper-middle class, Campusano delivers a melodrama about ennui, submission, and sex in which secondary characters –the demanding maid, who is both intense and deadpan– occasionally create comedy steps as uncomfortable as unusual. Under the singular verisimilitude contract you can establish with it, Martyrdom and Pleasure boils up a story of rarely seen intensity in Argentine cinema, with an extraordinary narrative pace and the vitality and appeal of those who aren’t afraid to fail, thus building a cinema whose rough edges allow it to widen its spectrum –or its specters.
