Dexys: Nowhere Is Home

Kevin Rowland is being chased by myth, but he is still able to outrun it. Unfriendly, slippery, and ugly, he resists idealizing his past, tries to not get bitter remembering his big failures or his big hits (he doesn’t even consider playing back his chart-toppers “Geno” or “C’mon Eileen”), and turns his nose up when fans and/or journalists approach him to talk about the Young Soul Rebels. That’s the reason Dexys: Nowhere Is Home is so precious: because Rowland (together with Jim Paterson) agrees to sit down for a long interview about everything he has always refused to talk about. Also, he tries to convince us that the present of Dexys (now without the Midnight Runners last names) is as splendorous as its past, and alternates between tortured confessions and footage from a 2013 concert, featuring mostly new songs. The tour said clearly that the Celtic soul patented by Van Morrison and continued by him remains unchallenged in this day and age. The last twenty minutes of “This Is What She’s Like” are the kind you won’t forget. JP
