There is a key element that can be seen when the title of the film is presented: the line below the title, with the year and copyright, makes it seem as if it were a film from the sixties or seventies, of those that show tortuous emotional confinement like, for example, Roman Polanski’s Repulsion. If Alex Ross Perry’s fourth film is psychological cinema, it is so out of conviction and not excess, carelessness or thoughtlessness. Two friends, Catherine and Ginny (Elisabeth Moss and Katherine Waterston), meet up at the edge of a lake –at Ginny’s family’s cabin– in order to heal some wounds and mourn, especially Catherine. There’s a key element to this reunion –Catherine doesn’t immediately recognize Ginny’s voice when she talks to her from the car. A sign –things aren’t what they used to be anymore. And this friendship could deteriorate, damage itself, become dark in the face of Catherine’s gradual emotional fall and Ginny’s understanding/aggressive reactions. A psychological thriller far from any trend, shot in 16mm and with some sharp editing that introduces flashbacks as elements embedding in the main characters’ soul. JPF
