Del verbo amar is a sensorial, repressive, and thanatic documentary. It’s a first person account, a reconciliation attempt to try and overcome the pain and bad memories the director has carried with her for many years due to the complex relationship she has maintained with her mother. Ever since she was a child, Jiménez was eager to maternal approval, and so she became the first in her class, went to therapy, trained in art and music, and studied Architecture. She went far in the career of becoming someone whom she didn’t wanted to be, but despite her efforts she was never able to please her inquisitive mother –and yet, she kept on looking for her approval. Soon after making her first film, her mother died. Following her mourning period, Jiménez waited several years before returning to Peru and confront her grief, in order to once again face the word love. That challenge is this film. Del verbo amar and Loco Lucho (1998) form a diptych about fatherly love and madness.
