Shiori, who’s 17, dresses as a Gothic Lolita. She dreams of her career as an actress, as a model, and lives with her boyfriend, a cool avant garde artist who’s sure of himself. Shiori has a blogcast. She interacts live with her followers, takes care of them, and keeps an eye on her performance. She meets another girl, Ayumi, who’s younger, more withdrawn, and worships her, copies her, follows her, settles in her place. Japanese adolescence, artifice, friendship, surprise, love, followers, messages, phones, apps, emoji, comic books, colors, the cinema screen invaded by second screens. Wonderful World End is a lovable pop movie that allows itself some sudden shifts in tone, gives us songs and the presence of singer Seiko Oomori. Its director, Daigo Matsui, knows how to approach teenage pop artifice with the best elements, those that add, with conviction, to the explosions of energy, rage, joy, and illusion. And it puts us in that world of plush we visited in films like Take Care of My Cat or Linda Linda Linda. JPF
