Días de Santiago

Josué Méndez’ film debut is to Peruvian cinema what Pizza, birra, faso was to Argentine cinema: the turning point between the past and the future, between an anchylosed rhetoric and a new realism attentive to the folklore, to the corporality of the urban landscape, to the sensibility of a generation that is in its late twenties. Some sort of Taxi Driver from Lima, Santiago (Pietro Sibille, who won with this film the Best Actor award of the International Competition at Bafici ‘04, and also at the Lima, Cuenca, Bratislave, Providence and San Juan, Puerto Rico’s film festivals) is an ex combatant –against the guerrilla, against Ecuador– who feels everything around him is hostile. And the only way to survive in that human jungle is fighting, like a soldier.
