Yvan Sorel runs a martial arts club in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Marseilles. He works under no subsidies of any kind for his students, who are kids and teenagers, not to end up in a gang or selling drugs in the streets. Sorel is strict, even cruel, and acts as coach, tutor and big brother while being aware that, aside from preparing them for their next championship, his mission is to train them for their lives to go uphill. Sorel is an ambiguous character, self-centered and generous at the same time, with a presence over which many other films could be built. And the great feat in Nicolas Wadimoff’s blunt, sometimes virtuous, directing is that he succeeds in not making that presence chew up the scenery –in exchange, he leaves us a reflection, not devoid of pessimism, on the voraciousness with which 21st century Europe can devour its most fragile children.
