Un burgués pequeño, pequeño

The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Vincenzo Cerami, the future screenwriter of Benigni films, although at the time he was primarily Pasolini’s ex pupil. And it is no coincidence that the book places itself at the core of reflection on an Italian society in the throes of deep transformation: the protagonist is a gray, mean ministerial clerk close to retirement who sees how his only son is killed, then kidnaps the murderer and tortures him to death. The film’s first strong decision was to wholly accept the book’s provocation, perhaps for the first time showing an average Italian as an authentic monster. The second fundamental bold move was choosing Alberto Sordi as the protagonist, as he was not only the greatest symbol of Italian-style comedy, but also the most emblematic, popular and most-loved incarnation of a Roman character on screen. “I played a pretty risky card” –Monicelli admitted– “because it could have been misconstrued as a fascist film; the danger laid in having chosen Sordi, because had I opted for Volonté the character could have easily become loathsome.”

He was an auteur in the most comprehensive sense of the word, as he wrote most of his films. He started his career in the Thirties directing student short films and working as an assistan...
