The beauty of trash is undeniable. There are the traces, the stories and the preferences of thousands of anonymous persons, and that is if you don’t even start considering the aesthetic part. The single stream the title refers to is the denomination given to a system of waste recycling in which paper, metal and plastic are separated not during collection, but at a later stage, while they go through a long conveyor belt. Single Stream closely follows the process (filled with turns, jumps and varying speeds), from the moment the garbage arrives to a sublime showdown at a plant in Massachusetts, USA. With a suggestive sound design by Ernst Karel –also responsible for the sound in The Iron Ministry, Manakamana and Leviathan, among other recent productions from the SEL–, Single Stream turns trash and the mechanical work on it into an amalgam of colors, shapes and sound on the edge of abstraction and the hypnotic.
