This is a tricky film. Premiered in Sundance and exec produced by actor Elijah Wood, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a US film that presents itself as “the first Iranian vampire western.” It’s a cinema-mix, a cross between Jim Jarmusch, David Lynch, and a vampire girl dressed as the lead character in Jafar Panahi’s The Circle. And it’s spoken in Persian, and set in Iran –sure, “set” is not exactly the same as “was shot in.” From many perspectives, A Girl… is a corrosive film that transcends any possible suspicion of indie-posing thanks to its atmosphere and wide imagination for details and unique characters. Born in England and raised in the US, director Ana Lily Amirpour had made several shorts beforehand, one of them is animated and German-produced A Little Suicide (Bafici 2013). With her first feature-length film, Amirpour proves that her variations, ingredients, and mixtures, are a fascinating base for transforming possible deceptions into cinema and genre truths. JPF
