Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires

One would wish today’s festival cinema was more like this, limitless and outrageous. One that would test our notions on good taste and correction. A color-filled, vane, and definitely sexy cinema. I Swear I’ll Leave This Town fits those adjectives, which are also good to describe the film’s protagonist Joi, a young woman from a distinguished Recife family who exits the clinic where she was rehabilitating from her addictions. In her return to civilian life, Joi finds the worst possible setting for reinsertion: a submissive boyfriend, a tempting partner of late night adventures from the past, and a father absorbed in an electoral campaign. Surprising, unpredictable, and blessed by Bianca Joy Porte’s performance, Daniel Aragão’s second film is a must for anyone who has wished for the return of De Palma in his most wound up version. FG
