Above and Below is the definitive improvement (probably the only one possible) of the little orange guy in Google Street View. Not just because these survivors’ stories detect what you can’t see at street level (let’s be clear: what Nicolas Steiner’s extraordinary film shows are not cases of “invisibilization,” because the protagonists are inhabitants of “hide-outs and refuges”, according to the director himself), but also because the documenting distance is always aiming at empathy and familiarity rather than extravagance –even if the film deals with people who live in the sewers of Las Vegas or rehearse in the reddest corner of Earth the dancing steps to a possible Life on Mars. Wonder and hurt, grace and darkness, epic and intimacy, and an estrangement followed by the kind of shots that hit us with the severity of that which we can recognize. Few times cinema came as close to poetry as in Above and Below. Or at least closer to W. H. Auden’s illuminating definition: “Poetry must be defined as the clearest expression of mixed feelings.” MP

Nicolas Steiner Suiza

He was born in Sion, Switzerland, in 1984 and studied Filmmaking in Ludwigsburg, Germany. He works as a drummer, actor, and director. He directed several short films, including Snatch & Kittie - Love Is in the Air (2006) and Blitz und Donner, Windgefauch (2009).
