#WalrusYes or #WalrusNo: that was the challenge Kevin Smith, the founding father of the smarty-pants (though honest in its show-offy meticulousness that started with his 1994 film Clerks) geek talk, gave to the legion of followers of his professional reinsertion, his podcast radio. It was June 2013, and Scott Mosier and him, who was semi-retired as a director, fantasized, thanks to the news of a man who asked for a companion “willing to dress as a walrus once in a while,” a version of the fetish with fangs, Hammer House-style. Tusk is the bizarre result of #WalrusYes, and Smith’s most deranged film (he had just made Red State, his first flirt with horror). Show-offy, sure and (even more so) aware of itself and fascinated with dialogue (always, and Michael Parks dresses up Dr. Moreau-style). Like never before, Smith seeks to be seventies’ drive-in midnight and creates a mutant film that touches you in places that sometimes tickle and sometimes make you gag, or an oppressive, novel, atrocious and moving mix of both.
