Not everyone is up-to-date with the relations between Greenland and northern Europe: it belonged to Norway, then to Denmark and, since 1979, has been autonomous region from the kingdom of the latter. Is there rock in Greenland? Is there rock in Greenland sung in Greenlandic? Greenlanders Malik Høek and Per Berthelsen were studying in Copenhagen and founded Sumé, the first rock band in Greenlandic. And they put out a record, Sumut, a long-player with remarkable cover art; and that album was a big hit, the success was absolute: it wore needles out in the homes of every young person in Greenland. And it was the soundtrack to the protests against Denmark in order to achieve more autonomy. Sumé – The Sound of a Revolution (or, better yet, Sume – Mumisitsinerup nipaa) is a film about a time, about two related countries, about the decisions of youth –mainly, it’s a film that takes us to another places, makes us discover a world we didn’t know, introduces us to some new music, in spite of all the references to Procol Harum and Iron Butterfly we can spot. And it does so with warmth, with good pace, with images that make the most of the country’s unique landscape, and with some very attractive stock footage. JPF
