Today it’s hard to believe, but there was a time when, in order to record an album, you had to be part of a label. And poor those who wanted to make music that didn’t fit with the industry standards of the time. Long before the arrival of the internet and of computers as portable studios, those responsible for that situation to change were the hardcore punk groups from Washington D. C. in the 80s, portrayed in this documentary by Scott Crawford. Having played an active role in the scene since he was a kid, Crawford (who founded Metrozine, a magazine made of Xeroxed copies, when he was twelve) reconstructs the decade of recovery for independent rock through testimonies by Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, Dave Grohl and practically who was in the right place at the right time. From the “do it yourself” ideology to the different genres that preceded the explosion of alternative rock in the nineties, Salad Days works as the definitive capturing of a crucial moment in order to understand today’s music, both as an artistic discipline and a business.
