About to turn 107, the only director in history whose career span covers silent film all the way through digital gathers four specters on a park bench. Poet Luíz Vas de Camões, novelists Camilo Castelo Branco and Teixeira de Pascoaes (whose novel O penitente inspired this short film sprinkled with fragments from other films by the Portuguese master) and Cervantes’ Don Quixote talk about past glories and defeats, about emptiness and alienation, about the uncertainty of the future, thus shaping a reflection of luminous pessimism –of course that exists; it even has an adjective: Oliveirian– on humanity.
