Monicelli’s most recent documentary is within the framework of what we might call a series of “filmic love letters” to the places he knows best and appreciates most. Vicino al Colosseo… c’è Monti is a 22-minute short in which Monicelli draws an affectionate portrait of the Roman neighborhood in which he has lived for twenty-two years; the numeric coincidence suggests a single minute filmed each year. Produced by Gianvito Cassadonte, who heads the Magna Grecia Film Festival, the project was inspired by the interest of the photographer Chiara Rapaccini in showing the changes in Monti, a “piccolo paesino” within Rome’s urban sprawl. Monicelli directed it from the dual viewpoint of the artist and the strolling pedestrian host who stops to chat with the locals and uses the camera to probe the venues that lend the neighborhood its character.
