The greatest difficulty in making a portrait of one of the most prolific and complex auteurs of Italian cinema resided mostly on choosing which aspects we would favor among so many possible ones. At first, we tried to have Mario tell us his intense and rich vision of life, because life is what his cinema is most intrinsically connected to. Then, we tried to focus on the collective work method, which was one of his strongpoints. The result is an inevitably partial and incomplete vision, but we hope it will be sincere, straightforward, and able to document the nature and infinite honesty of a man from a different time who leaves behind for everyone –especially young people– some very powerful tools to read the future and find their way in it.
