As if it were a documentary Boyhood, without any blandness or unnecessary emphases and center in the world of labor –a “workhood” –, Over the Years unites and reunites its characters through the course of ten years. We start at a textile company working in the region of Waldviertel, Austria, with the routine of the employees and the owner. Images and situations that seem from another time, even another century. Cloth diapers, handwritten appointment books. That company is destined to close. Nikolaus Geyrhalter meets the workers from the factory later, with their new realities, their new occupations, their new searches, and keeps finding them through the course of a decade. It wouldn’t be very wise to reveal more plot details, especially in this case, in which the director not only knows the distance he must establish, but also knows exactly what to ask and looks that the most fruitful, in order to achieve a multiple story we won’t be able to abandon until its three amusing, touching, revealing hours conclude. One of the best documentaries of the year, or even of the last ten years. JPF
