A perfect complement to Shoah, to the point that Out of the Forest could have well been made by Claude Lanzmann. Through the diary left by Kazimierz Sakowicz, a witness to the killings of the einsatzgruppen in Ponary, near Vilna (Lithuania), Limor Pinhasov, and Yaron Kaftori film in present day the sceneries from those massacre in which more than 70,000 Jewish people died between 1941 and 1943. In those very non-places of memory, they interview various survivors, children who had been left for dead back then. Their testimonies clash with those of some Lithuanians, who are reluctant in accepting responsibilities for their compatriots. By 1941, Vilna was a majorly Jewish and Polish city, and one can see that, by 2003, the gap between them and the Lithuanian community hadn’t healed yet (the same thing that happened with Poland in Shoah.) It’s hard to believe that a documentary as masterful as this one hasn’t enjoyed more recognition and hasn’t been screened more. JP
