Ever since the late Sixties, Narcisa Hirsch elaborated a body of work in Argentina with a wide aesthetic, conceptual, and cinematic range, which very few experimental filmmakers were able to match. She did so at times stretching the relation between the visual and the verbal, at times like a landscape artist hallucinated by pure iconicity, and at other times from a musical notion of the image, in which the Hirsch’s unlimited, industrious eye searches for that Borgean aleph referenced by the titles of one of her latest works. It’s the point of “unbearable shine” where the real and the imagined universes meet –wakefulness and dreaming, (that is). Born in 1928, her life is as fascinating as her work, hence the need for this tour through her career, which sheds light on a rather unknown portion of film history such as the origins of a pioneering group of experimental filmmakers in Argentina. And what Daniela Muttis, who worked with Hirsch for twelve years, manages to accomplish is an explosive and erudite portrait that also feels close and intimate because it mixes two virtues: a student’s admiration, and a friend’s complicity. 29th MDP Film Fest’s catalogue
